The department consists of a Head of Construction, Deputy Head of Construction and Workshop Assistant, including a Scenic Artist who is employed on a freelance basis. Salisbury Playhouse is a building based producing theatre which produces work in both the Main House and Salberg Studio. On average this will include eight Main House productions, three Studio productions, a pantomime and may include some co-productions. There is also a Participation department including a Youth Theatre that requires support from time to time. This is a full time contract.Specific duties will include:Realising designs from plans and modelsCosting of set designs in terms of materials and time scaleAdvising on choice of materials and construction methodsOrdering of materialsProducing scenery, using a variety of techniques, to deadlines as set by the line manager for Main House, Studio and Youth Theatre or Participation productions/projectsTo assist with the fit-up of the setTaking care of tools and equipment and adhering to good house keeping practises in the workshop and stageCarrying out repairs/improvements to the theatre buildings as skills and time allowTo deputise for the Head of Construction in their absenceThe Workshop Department will not normally be involved in the running of performances, but this may occur from time to timeThe workshop is also the theatre's paint shop and will be used for prop making as well.Fixed equipment includes radial-arm saw, bed saw, (both with dust extractor), Bandsaw and pillar drill, as well as a compressor with a selection of air tools, and a MIG welder.Applicants must understand that the job will involve working late hours and weekends and will involve strenuous physical work.
