I saw 'The Painter' at last Saturday's matinee. I'd never been to the old venue so can't compare, but I had a good time and enjoyed the play once it got going after the interval. Denise Gough gives a fantastic performance in a great part.

I thought it was fairly rotten to be the honest. It will be struggling to make it into my top 10 this month.
Far too many short scenes.
I'd cut the mother character entirely, she only has three scenes or so and we aren't given a chance to care about her and that bit where she attacked her husband was very hammy.
And I'm not sure it should really be open in that half finished state, it's pushing it a little bit. Would have been better to give it a bit more time to get ready before opening.
I think the reviewers went a bit easy on it as it's the first play since the re-opening.
