It must depend on the show, I think Annie on Broadway has just one girl playing Annie and perhaps a standby but other shows like Mary Poppins and Newsies have multiple kids. Billy Elliot on Broadway kept the multiple kids but the role of Billy is very demanding so logically they kept the system the same when they transferred but IIRC its runnings costs were very high which eventually caused its closure,

Ah I didn't realise they had cast 4 Matilda's on Broadway. Jon understood what I meant - Annie have one girl for all 8 performances and I just naively thought it would be the same for other shows.

Taken as an hourly rate it's not a bad salary for an adult, and about what you'd expect for a part-time job. (Unskilled part-time work is far lower than that.)

The key difference between UK and US children's pay in theatre is that in the US they don't differentiate between child actors and adult actors. Everyone is paid on the same scale.

So you're saying that the adults who swing on the swings are paid more than the kids who do? Just as example. Ridiculous situation. I wonder British Equity doesn't get on to it. The children probably have a shorter 'career' than the adults as only a few kids manage to become adult stars. Thoughts?

I believe that the kids are on the highest equity rate for child performers.... not sure where that equates them with the swings on the swings.

I'd imagine most of the children and families are doing it for the experience of being a major part of a big west end musical, rather than to launch any long term career.
