I'm not usually posting on the opera section but I was wondering what other people think of the ROH Butterfly that is on at the moment. I saw it last week and loved it. It is the same production that I saw in Dress R a few years ago with an amazing soprano who I think was from South America. This sop is equally good I thought and I love the sparseness of the production and the the way they have let the music lead as it were. Sometimes in opera they do too much messing about on the stage.

Is it the Leiser & Caurier production? If so I saw it a couple of seasons ago with Li Ping Zhang in the title role. I remember thinking she was superb but, although I'm generally a Puccini fan, Butterfly as an opera doesn't blow me away and I can't claim the production has stuck in my mind.

I think it's a good production It is telling without forcing another directorial gloss on it. The worst Butterfly I have ever seen was Robert Wilson's mind numbingly tedious re-telling. It looked exactly like every other Wilson production. god knows why he is still alowed to peddle his tired box of tricks - A true case of the Emperor's new clothes!

The video looks errr interesting! nice to see Mickey Mouse having a featured part
I'm really not a fan of the opera the at all. The score is amazing but I find the plot boring beyond belief when it really shoudln't be. The David Nixon ballet version is the best way to see it. IMHO
Broadway has been very good to me. But then, I've been very good to broadway.
