Review- An Inspector Calls

Venue: Theatre Royal, Newcastle
Opening with children playing in 1945 and kicking a radio in to life, the curtain rises to reveal a small house on stilts, breaking out from a rain soaked cobbled street below. Inside are a family gathered for a celebration and though the windows we can see them at the dining table, although they are far bigger than the room and we catch just glimpses of them as they pass the windows, a head here and an arm there. Finally the walls of the house burst open and transport us to 1912 and in to the world of The Inspector Calls.
But the children in the street continue to watch the action of the Birling family as the characters spill out from the small house, their lives about to change forever. Read more

There are several musicals that stand the test of time and Chicago is up there with the best of them. While the London production seems to run with regular stunt casting keeping the tourists coming back for more, on tour we have always had a first class cast who leave you wanting more, just the way it should be.
In the past we have seen Jennifer Ellison and John Altman lead the tours, both giving decent performances in their respective roles, but this time the casting is in a different league. On this current tour we have a truly recognisable face as money grabbing lawyer Billy Flynn. Read more

Caveman arrives on Tyneside
March 29, 2009
Mark Little (best known as Joe Mangel in Neighbours) has returned to his critically acclaimed role in ‘Best Entertainment’ Olivier Award winning production ‘Defending the Caveman’. Directed by Cathy Farr, its recent London run at the Leicester Square Theatre extended its run for 6 weeks due to popular demand and will be at the Journal Tyne Theatre and Opera House in Newcastle where it will play May 7th to 9th Box Office 0844 493 9999
Created and performed by Rob Becker in San Francisco in 1991, the show, which was awarded the prestigious honour when Mark took on the role at the Apollo Theatre in 2000, is the longest running solo play in Broadway history. Having been translated into 16 different languages, ‘Caveman’ has become a worldwide hit, performing to over 5 million people globally in Germany, Slovenia, Belgium, France, Russia, Australia and South Africa to name but a few! Next year it will be seen in Argentina and Brazil.
With hysterical observations into contemporary feminism, masculine sensitivity and the erogenous zones, ‘Defending the Caveman’ has both sexes roaring with laughter and recognition as they identify themselves in the tales being told. In short, it mines the common themes in relationships that go straight through the funny bone and into the heart.

Having seen David Essex perform several times already, in both musicals and concerts, there is one thing for certain; he has his loyal fans that will follow him wherever he goes and in their eyes he can do no wrong. Therefore combining his hits in to musical, starring the man himself, was a sure fire winner from the start.
Over the past few years we have seen these compilation shows take many forms, some of which are massively successful, like Mamma Mia and We Will Rock You. Sadly All the Fun of the Fair is not in their league. Read more
