Cinderella, is the traditional British Pantomime, and revolves around the loyal servant Buttons, who is in love with Cinderella, who in turn is in love with the handsome Prince Charming. In to the mix add two ugly step sisters, who are also in love, with themselves.
In this version of the pantomime Barron Hardup ( Billy Mitchell), father to Cinderella (Catherine MacCabe), marries Cissy (Brendan Healy), the not-so-nasty stepmother, who has two rather unpleasant looking daughters Sharon and Tracy (Maxie Peters and Kevin O’Keefe) with an outrageous wardrobe to match their personalities.
Cinderella has a chance meeting with Prince Charming (Jennifer Wren) in the forest; the Prince desperate to meet up with her again throws a ball hoping she will attend. The step- sisters make her destroy her invitation in an attempt to stop her going, however her fairy godmother ( Jane Holman) steps in and with the use of a pumpkin and two white mice Cinderella’s dream comes true.
The most memorable scene was the classic ghost chase around the bedroom encouraging child participation, however in the main no scenes, songs or dance routines (which lacked coordination throughout) seemed to score highly with the audience.
The production unfortunately lacked depth of character, which in a pantomime is not too serious but also missing was substance along with the usual laugh out loud scenes. The one song where children could join in was also rather bland. I would like to say it was unforgettable however not for the right reasons.
