We talk to UK Puppetry cast
September 29, 2008
Following our interview last week with the sounding members of Puppetry of the Penis, I managed to catch up with the current cast who are currently touring the UK.
Martyn Odell and Dan Lewey had arranged to meet me backstage just after they finished their checks for that evenings performance at the Journal Tyne Theatre in Newcastle. We finally found one of the dressing rooms just off the stage area which luckily had three chairs. I immediately noticed that both guys were very relaxed, friendly and extremely funny and made the interview feel more like a chat between friends, where nothing was off the agenda. Often interviews are timed to the second and very focused with certain questions or subjects being off limits, this was very different, thankfully.
Having covered how Puppetry of the Penis started last week with the shows creators Simon and David last week I wanted to know more about these guys and how an Englishman came to be involved in what seems to be a market cornered by the Australians.
Martyn told me that he came to see the show several years ago and was just one of the audience who decided to join the cast on stage when invited to do so. He explained that during every performance they offer the guys in the audience the opportunity to join them on stage and perform the “Hamburger” (you may recall from our earlier interview this was the “dick trick” that started the whole idea off when Simons brother demonstrated it to him). If no one volunteers the performers carry on with the act without any pressure, but often a student will feel brave enough to demonstrate their skill , exactly as Martyn had done a few years before. After his impromptu performance he swapped email addresses with the cast at the end of the show.
Puppetry of the Penis
September 29, 2008
Venue: Journal Tyne Theatre
Date Reviewed: 28th September, 2008
As its celebrates its tenth birthday Puppetry of the Penis is touring once again as proves it still has the power to surprise its audiences while at the same time leaves them laughing out loud.
No one can have failed to hear of this award winning comedy show that started live in Australia ( in fact the original performers have just recently given Whatsonstage.com North East an interview) so the audience were ready and waiting for Martyn and Dan.
But for the benefit of anyone who is unaware, the premise for the show is two naked men manipulate their genitals in to various shapes, with hilarious results. But the show never becomes tacky or dirty, it is just a good fun night out, where you can have a giggle.
Initially the performers appear in capes before stripping off completely (apart from their socks and trainers which are worn for health and safety reasons) as they begin the act.
Interestingly I found the jokes and humour between the two so entertaining from the start, I would have happily listened to that. But off the capes came and a video camera projected their “dick tricks” for all to see. These ranged from the Olympic torch complete with flame to the Eiffel Tower and the few men in the audience must have been cringing at the site of these two guys performing origami on their manhoods.
Dan Lewey was the first performer to join the show following the original cast and has stayed with the show for many years, having performed in his native Australia, Canada and the UK. While Martyn Odell is British and joined the cast after being one of the audience volunteers a few years ago. Read more

We Talk to the Puppetry Guys!
September 26, 2008
Our latest interview is with the two men who started the Puppetry of the Penis ten years ago. We took the chance to speak to both Simon and David about the concept for the show, how they started working together and what their families (espically their mothers!) think of them performing naked night after night.
We are also talking to the current cast, which includes the first British actor touring in the show, when they visit Newcastle on Sunday September 28th.
So check out our interview and see what the future might hold for Puppetry of the Penis………
Puppetry of the Penis is Ten Years Old!
September 26, 2008
Puppetry of the Penis is ten years old and Whatsonstage North East welcomed the chance to talk to the originators of
the show, Simon Morley (pictured in the dark cape) and David Friend (pictured in the red cape)who started the ball rolling, so to speak, a decade ago.
For those people unfamiliar with the show, the best way of explaining it is to imagine origami being performed on male genitalia, making various shapes, objects and landmarks, including The Eiffel Tower and Windsurfer! A video camera projects the details so no one misses a thing. Audiences around the world, both male and female have been left helpless with laughter at the antics of the on stage performers.
