The Live Theatre have a few exciting performances over the next few months which ends with Geoff Dead : Disco for sale, telling the story of Private Geoff Gray, who was 17 when he died at Deepcut, he was the first but not the last to do so. He was found with 2 bullet wounds to his head. The Army said it was suicide

AUGUST
A Proper Bash
Thursday 14 & Friday 15 August, 7.30pm
From Home to Newcastle
A thought-provoking production about young people’s own experience of life in
Newcastle as told by Geordie’s born and bred as well as refugees and asylum seekers
who now live in Tyneside.
This is one of 10 pilot projects nationally to be supported by the Young People’s
Participatory Theatre Project at the Arts Council, and was also performed in
Liverpool as part of the European City of Culture celebrations in July.
Friday 15, Saturday 16 & Sunday 17 August, between 11am-3pm
Streets Ahead
A series of visually exciting open air performances on Newcastle’s quayside created
by member’s of Live’s Youth Theatre.
Friday 15th August, 4 & 9pm
Solo
Rib tickling stand-up by a new generation of young comedians aged 13 to 23 years
old. The five minute routines, developed in conjunction with local comic John
Scott, will be performed in Live’s intimate Studio Theatre.
Sunday 17 August, 4 & 7.30pm
Past Forward
A chance to see some of the funniest highlights from a decade of working with local
communities presented by members of Live’s Youth Theatre and the over 50’s writing
and performance group Live Wires.

The perfect end to your weekend - Come along to this monthly Sunday night event to
hear the UK’s best contemporary poets read and talk about their work, held in Live
Theatre’s unique cabaret style venue.
Sunday 31 August, 7.30pm
Michael Longley & Colette Bryce
Michael Longley is widely regarded as one of the finest poets of his generation. A
master of lyric poetry’s perennial themes - love, nature, elegy - Longley has also
tackled the darkest of subjects, including the First World War, the Holocaust, and
the Northern Irish ‘Troubles’. Listen to him read from Collected Poems (Cape, 2006)
as well as new work.
Colette Bryce’s poetry is distinguished by its subtle, haunting music, and its
exploration of crisis-points that reveal startling new perspectives. Join her for
the launch of her third collection, Self Portrait in the Dark (Picador, 2008).

Tom Paulin & Bernard O’Donoghue
Tom Paulin’s new book, The Secret Life of Poems (Faber, 2008), is a primer of
forty-seven poems from Milton to Heaney, with commentaries that focus on sound,
rhythm, form and sources. Paulin is also well known for his appearances on the BBC’s
Newsnight Review.
Bernard O’Donoghue has published four collections of poetry, each of which is
presented in his new Selected Poems (Faber, 2008). His poems are characterised by
their lyricism, their grace, and what John Burnside has called their ’scrupulous
honesty’.

New Writing Studio Sessions
Interested in listening to some exciting new writing from across the North East and
beyond? Then come along to Live Theatre on the first Thursday of every month for a
series of rehearsed readings all in the intimate setting of Live’s Studio Theatre.

Home Fires by Sean O’Brien
Live Theatre presents a rehearsed reading of the second part of the trilogy of
political plays which began with Laughter When We’re Dead by celebrated poet and
writer, Sean O’Brien - who is Professor of Creative Writing at Newcastle University
and recently became the first poet to win both the Forward Poetry Prize and the T S
Eliot Prize in the same year.

A Twist of Lemon
Monday 8, Tuesday 9 & Wednesday 10 September, 7.30pm
Presented by Open Clasp
Four women set off on holiday, each seeking sun, sea, sand, love and romance.
However a white knuckle drive in a taxi, power cut and a ride on the resorts Banana
Boat, not only put one woman’s back out but results in the women having a major fall
out. Set against the backdrop of adversity A Twist of Lemon highlights the courage,
strength and humility of young lesbians and lesbians living in the North East.

This Wide Night
Wednesday 17 & Thursday 18 September
Crackling with wit and sparkling with hope - a tender portrayal of two women trying
to start again. Marie has been out of prison for a while now and is trying to get
her life back on track. Lorraine has just been released after a long stretch and
turns up at Marie’s unannounced. It’s good having her around again at first and
Lorraine makes her laugh like nobody else, but they’re not locked up together
anymore, are they?

A co-production between New Writing North and Live Theatre
Private Geoff Gray, was just seventeen when he was found dead, next to the perimeter
fence at Deepcut barracks, in the early hours of the morning on 17 September 2001.
He had two bullet wounds to his head. The Army said it was suicide. Private Gray
was not the first young recruit whose life ended in suspicious circumstances at
Deepcut, nor would he be the last.
At a time when most families can shut the door and retreat into private grief, the
Deepcut families are propelled into the harsh glare of the media spotlight. With
many questions still remaining unanswered their quest for a public inquiry
continues.
