Surprise Surprise Cilla’s at The Live
June 5, 2008
Me & Cilla is a new play by by Lee Mattinson, Directed by Steve Gilroy, which will play the Live Theatre on Newcastle Quayside between Thursday 12 June to Saturday 5 July
The show promises to be a hilariously heartbreaking black-comedy from this exciting new writer.
The setting is at Christmas Eve in the Stephenson house and Cilla’s struggling with a buffet. Cliff’s ringing after The Snowman and Dale’s on speed dial in case of emergency. But it’s going to take more than wet look lip gloss to stick this family back together again. Because Ringo’s late home from his pantomime, Alfie’s dabbling with Danni Minogue chic and Sadie’s in a borrowed thong.
But Cilla has to raise the most fabulous of fake smiles. Because between Buckaroo, sex changes and a mint choc chip Vienetta, she has a surprise surprise all of her own.
We will be reviewing the show on June 17th
Manilow music show to hit Newcastle?
June 5, 2008
Can’t Smile Without You, based on the songs of American singer-songwriter Barry Manilow, will hit the stage this year. The new compilation musical opens on 28 August 2008 at Bromley’s Churchill Theatre, where it continues until 6 September ahead of a three-month regional tour and planned West End transfer next year, with unconfirmed reports stating the tour will play Newcastle. No venue or dates have been released as yet, but here hoping.
Barry Manilow has sold more than 75 million records worldwide. At the height of his success in the late 1970s, he had five albums on the best-seller charts in the US. His many easy-listening singles include “I Write the Songs”, “Mandy”, “Looks Like We Made It”, “Weekend in New England”, “Ready to Take a Chance Again”, “I Made It Through the Rain”, “Can’t Smile Without You” and “Copacabana”.
Molora
June 4, 2008
Venue: Northern Stage, Newcastle
Date Reviewed: 3rd June, 2008
Molora is brought to us by the Oxford Playhouse in association with the Barbicanbite08 and is based on the Greek classic Oresteia . This adaptation by Yael Farber (who also directs) is moving , riveting and gives us the opportunity to see two fantastic performances by leading ladies Dorothy Ann Gould (Klytemnestra) and Jabulile Tshabalala (Elektra)
The play is set in a typical South African hall where people gather to testify at the Truth and Reconciliation Commission and the bare stage with its over hanging florescent lights captures the atmosphere brilliantly . When you enter the theatre you find the cast already seated around the auditorium, slowly one by one they move from there seats, through the audience to the stage. First, we have the Chorus of Xhosa, singing as they walked towards the stage, before the main players take their places. The scene is set as one of the women removes a very large plastic sheet that hides a wooden floor and a mound of sand that represents a grave.
