New season at Theatre Royal announced

THEATRE ROYAL NEWCASTLE has announced details of its new summer ’08 season which features fantastic drama productions.

These include both Alan Ayckbourn’s Relatively Speaking (Mon 9 – Sat 14 June) starring Peter Bowles (To The Manor Born)

and the revival of Anthony Shaffer’s stage thriller Sleuth (Mon 30 Jun – Sat 3 Jul) which stars Simon MacCorkindale (Casualty, Falcon Crest) and Michael Praed (Dynasty).

Other highlights of the season include:

Dad’s Army (Tue 27 – Sat 31 May) is one of the most popular British comedies of all time and it is lovingly recreated for the stage with a star-studded cast, including Leslie Grantham (Dirty Den, EastEnders).  This production will offer a unique opportunity to see the lost episodes after the originals were erased by the BBC.

Opera North’s (Tue 3 – Sat 7 Jun) summer residency delivers a series of new productions of Shakespeare’s works.  The week long season comprises of Macbeth (Wed 4 & Sat 7 June), Roméo et Juliette (Tue 3 & Fri 6 Jun) and A Midsummer Night’s Dream (Thu 5 & Sat 7 Jun)

Tommy Steele, one of the country’s most revered performers, makes a welcome return to the Theatre Royal to star in the spectacular hit musical Doctor Dolittle (Mon 16 – Sat 21 Jun).  Doctor Dolittle is a world-renowned veterinarian who speaks a wide array of animal languages.

 He sets off from his home in Puddleby-on-the-Marsh, England, in search of the Great Pink Sea Snail. Along the way, he and his friends meet such exotic creatures as the Pushme-Pullyu and the Giant Moon Moth. The Oscar Award-winning score includes the hits If I Could Talk To The Animals, I’ve Never Seen Anything Like It and My Friend The Doctor.

Dance fans have a second chance to see the blistering Magic of the Dance (Mon 23 – Sat 28 Jun) which sold every seat in the house when it last appeared at the Theatre Royal in 2005.  One of the most spectacular Irish Dance shows in the world, Magic of the Dance combines special effects with tapping so energetic, powerful and fast that you will see a dancer’s shoes burst into flame – live on stage!

 Anthony Shaffer’s worldwide sensation Sleuth (Mon 30 Jun – Sat 5 Jul) This play is regarded by many as one of greatest ever stage thrillers. Simon MacCorkindale (Casualty) and Michael Praed (Dynasty), star in this audacious revival of Anthony Shaffer’s masterpiece.The story starts when a young man arrives at the impressive home of a famous mystery writer, only to be unwittingly drawn into a tangled web of intrigue and gamesmanship, where nothing is quite what it seems…

Watched by millions every year the Eurovision Song Content has become a national obsession.  Re-live the hilarious world of Eurovision live on stage in Eurobeat (Almost Eurovision) (Mon 7 – Sat 12 July).

Hosted by Mel Giedroyc (Light Lunch) And Les Dennis (Family Fortunes), and with a special introduction from Sir Terry Wogan, watch ten countries compete to win your vote to be named Eurovision Song Contest Champions.

 A spectacular event for all the family to enjoy this summer, the Theatre Royal hosts the European premiere of Flying Dragon Circus (Tue 15 – Sat 19 July).      Flying Dragon Circus is an exhilarating mix of Kung Fu Shaolin warriors displaying astonishing feats of athleticism and strength, and breathtaking aerial skills from British artists including cloud swing and flying trapeze.  The show will also feature a new score performed live by Chinese musicians and Newcastle’s own band The Baghdaddies.  This event forms part of the EAST Festival.

High School Musical is one of the most popular shows in the Theatre Royal calendar, with some performances already sold out! 

Disney’s High School Musical (Mon 21 July - Sat 2 August) is the tale of Troy, super-popular captain of the basketball team, and Gabriella, super-smart transfer student and a genius in science class – as they surf the tricky tides of peer pressure and canteen cliques to follow their dreams and score the leads in the big school show, and a place in each others hearts.
