High School Musical on Ice

high-scholl-ice-show_thumbnail2.jpgIn the high street, most clothing stores and every school play ground, you will almost certainly see  the High School Musical logo. It is the Grease of today and with the Disney brand at the helm its a global force to be reckoned with.

We know this year will not only have the television versions but touring live are the stage and ice shows. First to reach us is the ice show which is spectacular in the true Disney tradition. Let’s face it on paper this sounds a dreadful idea but Disney are the masters and within minutes you think the whole concept should have started as an ice show.

The audience was full of children sporting every kind of T-Shirt available and all very eager to see their favourite characters in person (Its not the TV actors but no one seemed to mind)

There are really two shows , each filling one half of the bill. In essence we have High School Musical One playing the first half and High School Musical Two, after the interval.
But really what is important to the whole show is the relationship between Troy and Gabriella, who we know will meet, fall in love, fallout of love and then reunite before the evening is done. We have the evil Sharpay and her brother Ryan to thank for trying to split up the lovers but then we have to blame someone for spoiling things in true pantomime fashion.

It is very impressive the way in which the films have been converted to an ice show and adults and children alike join in with the proceedings from the start.

Production design by Jeremy Railton involves quick changes, projection screens, tricks (watch out for those basket balls dropping) and the skating, which is second to none.
With the audience knowing the songs and the story, they are ready to party from the off and Disney does not fail to deliver, High School Musical becomes High School Magic, now we await the stage version………
