Painters become a National Treasure
January 28, 2008
From April 3rd for one month The Pitman Painters return to the Live Theatre. Written by Lee Hall (Billy Elliot) this play was a sell out success when first performed as the opening show at the refurbished Live Theatre last year and it is great news that North East audiences are being allowed to see it again.
Following its run at the Live the play moves on to The National Theatre in May. This production is going to sell out quickly, so book soon to avoid disappointment.
The play set In 1934, tell the story of a group of Ashington miners and a dental mechanic who hire a Professor from Newcastle University to teach an evening class in Art Appreciation. Completely unable to understand each other they decided to embark on one of the most unusual experiments in British Art as the Pitmen learned to become painters.
Within a few years their work is in prestigious collections and they become friends with the most avant garde artists of the day. They are celebrated throughout the British Art World but still get up every morning to go working down the mine.
They say truth is stranger than fiction and this play is based on fact, which makes it all the more riveting. Do not miss the opportunity to see production
