Sleeping Beauty : Journal Tyne Theatre Newcastle
The annual pantomime at the Journal Tyne Theatre this year is Sleeping Beauty and stars local favourites Brendan Healey and Maxie and Mitch.
While we still have the story of the princess being cursed by the evil fairy who was not invited to her christening, which leads her to prick her finger and sleep for 100 years, at the heart of the show. Healy has taken great liberties with the story, but all in the name of family entertainment.
We have at the heart of this show three people who understand pantomime and that is very important. It is a true old fashioned show, there may be more lavish productions around but here we have sweets thrown in to the audience, children brought up on stage and crazy songs thrown in for good measure, which even include a group of leprechauns.
Healy plays the jester who keeps the proceedings ticking along, while double act Maxie and Mitch work extremely hard on the comedy. Playing the Kings bumbling Henchmen, Hank and Marvin, they appeal not only to the children but adults as well. The pair are involved in comedy sing songs, knockabout routines such as the 12 days of Christmas and an Elvis singing competition.
Of the several dance routines in the show, the best is when Healy is searching through the woods and comes across several monsters.
The press performance was actually the shows first performance so no doubt timings and scene changes will improve in the next few days.
This is a great value show that will suit all generations from young children to great grandma with true Geordie humour at its heart.
