Horrible Histories on tour (reviewed at the Sunderland Empire)
Horrible Histories, presented by Birmingham Stage Company are currently touring two productions, The Awful Egyptians and The Ruthless Romans. These are fun educational shows that teach children about histories without them realising they are being taught. I only wish they had been around when I was at school.
The Awful Egyptians starts at a museum and then goes though a journey of ancient Egyptian history from the pyramids, showing their secrets and spells as well as how and where to build one, to how to make a mummy.
Parents and children alike groan, squirm and laugh nervously as we are shown how to make a mummy, with all the gory details of how the brains are pulled out though the nose and how all the organs are removed one by one, including where they are all stored and for what reason. As the mummy is wrapped we are treated to a WRAP song called the’ body wrap’. This is followed by a funeral song that closes the first half, but it is not a sad affair, in fact the entire audience joins in with the actions.
The second half brings BOGGLEVISION , you wear glasses like 3D but the quality and effects are far better. We are again taken on another journey though the pyramids, but this time the audience are ducking and diving as objects appear to fly directly towards them
The scenery was simple, a few props, five actors and a screen but combine these with brilliant sound effects , humour , songs ranging from football chants to wrap songs aimed at the younger audience and you have a perfect mix.
Our daughters, 6 and 7 years old, sat mesmerised at the show, with the elder telling us which parts of the Egyptian history she had recently been taught at school.
If you like blood and guts, want something educational and are interested in modern day special effects and humour this is the show to for you and all the family.
