Aladdin prepares to open
November 30, 2007
As the Theatre Royals record-breaking pantomime Aladdin is just a few days away from opening Whatsonstage.com North East were allowed in to the technical rehearsals. On the surface all seems very calm as the cast work with the lighting and sound effects teams to bring the production to life, all under the watchful eye of director and writer Michael Harrison.
This year sees Michael working on his fourth pantomime with Clive Webb and Danny Adams (three at the Theatre Royal) and second with Craig Conway. One casting change is the leading lady, as for the last two years (Cinderella followed by Jack and the Beanstalk) Clive and Danny had Jill Halfpenny as their leading lady, this year sees Faye Tozer (formerly from the hit band STEPS) take over, playing the magical spirit Scherazade. Tattercoats (by Susan Mulholland) tells the tale of a girl (Lisa McGrillis ) who lives with her grandfather (Alex Elliott ) and to pass the time makes herself a coat from pieces of material she is given. But the grandfather is to sad, following the death of his daughter to take any notice of the girl and he literally cries buckets full of tears. They said come forth and they have!

For the past three years the Theatre Royal pantomime in Newcastle has broken records, time after time. Father and son comedy duo Clive Webb and Danny Adams started the hit shows with Jill Halfpenny in Cinderella, before returning in Jack and the Beanstalk, (with on that occassion not only Jill but her now real life husband Craig Conway playing the vilian snotgobbler). This year they are back with Craig but the leading lady is Faye Tozer from STEPS in Aladdin, which features the Darleks and Bogglevision.
The Theatre Royal has now told us next year , 2008 / 09 panto will again star Clive and Danny in a prodction based on Robinson Crusoe, again written by Micheal Harrison who had been responsible for the previous three pantomimes.
Booking opens in the next few weeks and no doubt it will again break all box office records and deservedly so.
Doctor Dolittle
November 21, 2007
Dr Dolittle is best is remembered as the classic film starring Rex Harrison , although younger audiences will refer to the two Eddie Murphy pictures of the same name, which have nothing to do with this show.
The original stage version starred Phillip Schofield as Dolittle ( Russ Abbott toured in the show) and the voice of Julie Andrews (unfortunately not used in this production) as Polynesia. This is a new version presented by Bill Kenwright, which is slicker and more colourful than before and benefits by starring Tommy Steele (Half a Sixpence). Steele is a firm family favourite and though now in his 70s he is still a showman who can light up a stage with his amazing smile.
