Nicholas Nickleby Parts 1 and 2
October 17, 2007
The Chichester Festival Theatre epic production of The Life and Adventures of Nicholas Nickleby is staged in two parts. While each “play” does stand on its own, you really have to see both parts to fully appreciate the production, with programming allowing you to either see them on separate evenings or together in one long haul. But the opening of the second play starts with a brief and delightful recap of the action in part one.
It is 21 years since the RSC toured their production of Nicholas Nickleby, and this time around the running time has been trimmed to well under seven hours, instead of eight and a half.
A crime of passion?
October 15, 2007
A ‘cheeky’ situation has been occurring at Northern Stage as images for the up-coming production of CASANOVA, featuring an exquisite example of a ladies bottom, have been disappearing from walls and frames across the university. CASANOVA - a scandalously funny and passionate reinvention of the Western world’s most notorious lover which sees the title role played as a woman – is at Northern Stage from 23 to 27 October and is a co-production with Told by an Idiot and Lyric Hammersmith. This new interpretation of CASANOVA is a collaboration between Carol Ann Duffy, one of the UK’s most popular contemporary poets and Told By An Idiot.
The posters, which are displayed in frames outside of the theatre and across the university campus, have been found to be empty in the morning, something which is becoming a regular occurrence rather than a single incident. Northern Stage’s regular team of Student Ambassadors – responsible for promoting upcoming shows throughout the Newcastle and Northumbria campuses – are reporting the disappearance of posters soon after they’ve been put up. So much so, the company have resorted to printing more.
A Dickens of a time for Royal audiences
October 11, 2007
A REVELATION when it was performed by the Royal Shakespeare Company, Chichester Festival Theatre presents The Life and Adventures of Nicholas Nickleby Parts I and II) at the Theatre Royal from Monday 15 - Saturday 20 October.
Nicholas Nickleby became a landmark production in 1980 winning the Olivier and Tony Awards for Best Play as well as being described as a once in a lifetime theatrical experience by audiences. Last year, history repeated itself, when the Chichester Festival Theatre presented the first ever major revival which played to rave reviews and packed houses. The sheer scale of the production makes it a truly unique event.

Pitmen Painters keep on painting
October 8, 2007
The new play by Lee Hall , The Pitmen Painters, which reopened the Live Theatre after a 5.5 million rebuild has been so successful it is extending the run by a week. The show now runs until November the 3rd.
Set in Northumberland the play tells the true life story of a group of pitmen who learnt to paint. The play captures the warmth and humour of Halls most famous work, Billy Eliott.
Having broken Live Theatres sales record, the play has received excellent reviews (check the WOS North East review) and will no doubt have a life after Live Theatre. Covering several years in the lives of the miners, we follow them as they start on a journey of discovery, first of all trying to understand art before they actually trying to put paint on a canvas.
