THE CARL ROSA COMPANY returns to the Theatre Royal Newcastle with three Gilbert and Sullivan masterpieces, Iolanthe, The Yeomen of the Guard andPatience from Tuesday 6 - Saturday 10 November.
Iolanthe is an enduring fantasy on the class and political system. Directed by the company’s Artistic Director Peter Mulloy, it tells the tale of a ward of court who may not marry her shepherd boyfriend. His fairy queen mother and aunts storm Westminster to make him a Member of Parliament so he can win the girl with fantastic consequences.
The Yeomen of the Guard is directed by Michael McCaffrey and is a story of ill-fated love, intrigue and escape in Tudor England. A framed colonel is to be executed in the Tower of London on charges of witchcraft. A mock marriage would cheat his betrayer of his estate. The court jester offers his sweetheart a bag of coins, but will the plan have a happy ending for everyone? This new production of Patience is directed by Peter Mulloy and is a nineteenth century sparkling satire on Oscar Wilde and the aesthetes. A pretentious poet seduces a bevy of country girls away from their army sweet hearts, although he really fancies the village milkmaid. When a rival poet appears it leads to delirious mayhem.
Carl Rosa Company present Iolanthe, Yeoman of the Guard and Patience at the Theatre Royal from Tuesday 6 - Saturday 10 November.
Tickets are priced at £9.50 - £26.50
