Save “Money, Money, Money” on Manchester theatre tix!
July 3, 2008
With the publicity for the film version of Mamma Mia! going into overdrive, I could not resist the pun within the headline. But, there is another reason, with the credit crunch hitting hard, I have decided to morph into Martin Lewis and share my tips on how you can get theatre in Manchester on the cheap.
With food, petrol and the cost of living on the rise, theatre tickets might be the last thing on your shopping list.
You often read about how to get West End bargains, but never Manchester. So, here goes:
1) Have a look at lastminute.com. Many people associate this site with London theatre only. But there is a regional section and they cover many of the main theatres, such as the Palace, the Opera House and the Lowry with discounts to be had. It’s always worth a look.
2) Subscribe to websites offering discounts. The Royal Exchange have a great newsletter, which often has superb offers with tickets to be had for as little as a fiver! You can also subscribe to ticketmaster regionally which will also give you the odd special offer. The Manchester Evening News sometimes have offers on Fridays in their City Life supplement and the paper itself is free if you live or work in the City Centre! Read more
Manchester Theatre…… discuss
June 20, 2008
Whatsonstage.com has expanded at an enormous rate over the last few months. Here in Manchester, we have been amazed at how many of you are enteting competitions, visiting the site and emailing us. Unsurprisingly, some of you have asked if the micro-sites could have their own dedicated discussion boards.
Here, you will be able to discuss all things Manchester, in terms of what’s on stage. So, if you have seen a great play in Manchester or squirmed your way through something quite awful, or you are looking forward to Mary Poppins flying into Manchester or anything else on stage in the North-West, we would like to hear from you, via the discussion board.
Don’t forget you can also leave comments at the end of stories and reviews. (please don’t enter competitions using this method though, as your entry will not be counted. See ticket offers page for details on how to enter).
So, if you have anything you wish to discuss with other Manchester folk, please click here.
As ever, if you have any more suggestions or thoughts on the site, please email me- glenn@whatsonstage.com
Thanks for visiting and don’t forget, discuss!

Queer Up North’s remaining highlights
May 18, 2008
Queer Up North has been giving Manchester arts lovers food for thought for over a week now. And what a week it’s been!
Sandra Bernhard opened the festival and you either loved it or hated it. Many left during the show, whilst others whooped her to the rafters. Think of her as a type of comedy marmite!
Sandra then appeared at the Cornerhouse to introduce the movie of her stage show, Without You I’m Nothing.
Film theorist, Richard Dyer and B Ruby Rich talked about gay representation in movies to a packed audience at the Cornerhouse on Monday evening. Meanwhile at the Library Theatre a small play called Tough time, nice time enthralled audiences with its thought provoking dialogue and challenging characters. Read more
Queer Up North - ready to roll
May 9, 2008
After a touch and go few months, Queer Up North is finally open for business, with the opening taking place tonight. First up is the brilliant comedienne, Sandra Bernhard with her celebrated show, Without You I’m Nothing. This is her only UK date and should be a great opener to the festival.
But many people have asked me this week; who is she? Well, friends under 30, that is! Bernhard has starred in the hit sit com, Roseanne, Martin Scorcese’s critically acclaimed film, The King Of Comedy, Will & Grace and The L Word. But, in her guise as stand up comedienne is where this talented lady truly shines.
She regularly appears at the Castro Cinema in San Francisco to sell out crowds on New Year’s Eve. Going back a few years, she snogged Madonna and speculation grew about the pair, until it was revealed that the ‘affair’ was staged. This was before the internet and the buzz about the pair was huge. It did neither Madge or Sandra any harm. Read more
WOS Manchester Needs You: reviewers required!
April 30, 2008
Do you fancy getting your hands on some free theatre tickets, in return for a review? Have you got writing experience, love theatre and are willing to give any production a try?
If so, you may be what we are looking for. Due to our continued expansion, we are looking for a couple of reviewers to cover productions at the Bolton Octagon or the Contact Theatre. There will be times when you are also asked to cover shows at some of the main theatres also.
If you live near either of these venues, love theatre, and have experience of writing reviews, then please send me a CV, a short email explaining why you would like to work for us and an example of your work.
In return, you will get the chance to see some great theatre for free, attend press nights and see your name online regularly.
Thanks, Glenn
