Five Reasons To See…Raving Beauties
Katie McArdle, recently seen in an award-winning production of Contre Coup at Buxton Festival Fringe, plays Karen in a production of Dave Simpson’s recently re-worked Raving Beauties at Studio Salford from 15 -18 April. She gives us her five reasons to see this hit comedy.
1. The Play:
The story of Salford beauty contest where contestants battle it out for the title of Miss Golden Gate Club 1985. Whilst dealing with their own rivalries they must also face the lecherous compere Jack Bailey. Tears and laughter ensue in what also proves to be a compelling and often poignant play.
2. The Playwright:
Dave Simpson is a Salford born playwright with over 25 years experience in the industry. He was resident writer at the Manchester Library Theatre for 2 years where he wrote several plays for them including Raving Beauties (originally titled The Beauty Game). Other writing credits include over 30 productions for the BBC and plays such as Girl’s Night Out and most recently The Naked Truth which is due to be shown at the Opera House in June. His ability to create characters that are both humorous and endearing makes for funny, sad and touching viewing.
3. The Cast:
A lovely cast which combines experience with newcomers coupled with fantastic direction from Paul Walker makes for an enthusiastic and thoughtful approach to the play.
4. The History:
Raving Beauties is back 22 years after it was first performed at the Library Theatre in 1986. It is the third revival of the play with a newly reworked script which Dave Simpson has allowed Broken Echo Theatre Company to perform for the first time.
5. The Venue:
A Salford based play at a Salford based venue. Studio Salford is a fantastic and well-respected fringe venue with a huge following for promoting artists from all over Salford and Manchester. The 60-seat performance capacity makes for unique and intimate performances.
