Exchange Premieres True Love Lies
Manchester’s Royal Exchange Theatre is set to stage premieres of work by two major Canadian writersthis month.
Audiences currently have the chance to catch the world premiere of True Love Lies by Brad Fraser in the Theatre (Wednesday 28 January – Saturday 21 February) and the British premiere of Palace At The End by Judith Thompson in The Studio (Wednesday 4 February – Saturday 21 February).
Royal Exchange founding Artistic Director Braham Murray directs True Love Lies – a wisecracking drama which sees family relationships stretched to breaking point as interior designer Kane and his wife Carolyn are forced by their children to confront an emotional time bomb from the past. The cast includes Jonny Phillips, John Kirk, Teresa Banham, Amy Beth Hayes and Oliver Gomm.
Brad Fraser has forged a hugely successful relationship with the Exchange over the last 13 years. Previous RET productions of his work include Unidentified Human Remains and the True Nature Of Love, Martin Yesterday, Snake In Fridge and Cold Meat Party. The author’s explicit style has attracted acclaim and controversy in equal measure.
In The Studio Royal Exchange Artistic Director Greg Hersov directs Palace Of The End – a remarkable triptych of monologues exposing the ugly truth behind the headlines of the current conflict in Iraq.
The three perspectives include a female American soldier facing court-martial for torture and prisoner abuse, a British former UN Weapons Inspector exposed as a source for the BBC and an Iraqi mother and political leader who suffered the greatest loss imaginable at the hands of Saddam Hussein.
Judith Thompson had her work last seen at the Royal Exchange in 2002 with the production of her play Habitat. The cast includes Kellie Bright, Eve Polycarpou and Robert Demeger.
