Looking Forward: What to see in 2009

Happy New Year!

It’s been a fantastic year for Manchester theatregoers. How do you top it? With the credit crunch continuing to bite, theatre is providing audiences with an escape route from doom and gloom.

But how do you decide what to see, when there is so much jostling for your attention?

Here are our superb seven to see in 2009:

Rock ‘N’ Roll
The Library Theatre have a real coup here, with this North West premiere of Tom Stoppard’s highly acclaimed piece. A real must see!

Brief Encounter
If you missed this in the West End, never fear as it’s coming to the Lowry in March. If you are a fan of the film, you are in for a real cinematic/theatrical treat!

Oleanna
If you want a thought provoking night at the theatre, you cannot go wrong with David Mamet’s biting dialogue and unforgiving atmospheres. This looks like another winner for the Octagon.

Haunted
Brenda Blethyn returns to the Royal Exchange in this World Premiere, following her wonderful turn in their Glass Menagerie.

Wuthering Heights

Another Premiere, this time at the Oldham Coliseum, as Bronte’s classic gets the Bollywood treatment. This could be stunning.

Adventures Of Wound Man And Shirley
Presented by Queer Up North, this inventive production features hand drawn animation and original music in a tale about an unconventional superhero. Coming to the Contact Theatre in April.

Little Shop Of Horrors
This Menier Chocolate Factory production transferred to the West End and arrives in Manchester (Opera House) in April as part of its UK tour. I cannot wait!
