Lowry’s Wizard does magical business

The Lowry’s Christmas show The Wizard of Oz has proved to be a record-breaker. The Salford arts venue was always sure it would have a hit with the classic tale based on the famous film. But with the public clamouring for tickets the show has proved the biggest box-office success The Lowry has ever enjoyed.

Since the glittering production opened on Sat 29 November attendances have been up 40 per cent on last years Christmas show Dick Whittington and so far 67,000 visitors have bought tickets.

“It’s just remarkable,” said David Fry, Head of Theatres Programming. “The public have really taken this family show to their hearts. We always have a fabulous production for the festive season but we knew we had something special with this one. The combination of the supremely talented Lorna Luft and rising local star Katie Schofield as Dorothy make it hard to resist. Tickets are selling fast but we are open until Sun 4 January so seats are still available”.

The Wizard of Oz
’s success is down to several factors: a familiar story, special effects and star quality. That star ingredient is provided by Lorna Luft, daughter of Judy Garland who played Dorothy in the original film. Lorna has thrived in the role of the wicked witch, loving every minute - despite being booed in the great British panto tradition.

Also making a name for herself in the show is Katie Schofield from Bury who was chosen by Lorna in auditions live on BBC North West Tonight. The talented youngster has won rave reviews and is tipped for great things in the future.

The Wizard of Oz is based on, and faithful to, the classic Judy Garland film. All the famous songs and characters are there. Dorothy, the Tin Man, Scarecrow and Cowardly Lion, singing such hits as “We’re Off To See The Wizard”, “Follow The Yellow Brick Road” and of course the unforgettable, “Over The Rainbow.”
