Steven Houghton on Seven Brides

Steven Houghton is currently starring in UK Productions tour of Seven Brides For Seven Brothers. He also starred in Spend, Spend, Spend, Annie Get Your Gun, Blood Brothers and Grease, as well as hit TV shows such as Doctors, London’s Burning and Holby City.

He currently stars alongside Grease Is The Word winner Susan McFadden, fresh from her West End starring role as Sandy in the hit musical. Steven stars as Adam Pontipee, the role originally created by Howard Keel in the Oscar winning musical.

Set in Oregon in 1850, Seven Brides for Seven Brothers is the irresistibly upbeat story of mountain lumberjack Adam Pontipee, the eldest of seven brothers, who goes to town to get a wife. He convinces local girl Milly to marry him that very same day. They return to his back-woods home and only then does she discover he has six strapping brothers. Hence the title of the show! (more…)


Local actor David Dawson plays RSC’s Romeo

romeo.jpgFollowing its successful visit with The Comedy of Errors last year, the Royal Shakespeare Company returns to Salford from 11 – 15 November with Shakespeare’s epic tale of thwarted love, Romeo and Juliet.

David Dawson, who comes from Widnes and trained at RADA, will now perform alongside Anneika Rose. Both actors are making their RSC debut in the title roles of Romeo & Juliet.

Anneika Rose, who trained at the Royal Scottish Academy of Music and Drama, now joins David and the company in rehearsals. Laura Rees, who was scheduled to play the part of Juliet has regrettably, had to withdraw from the show due to illness.

David Dawson recently played Smike in The Life and Adventures of Nicholas Nickleby (Gielgud Theatre, London; Chichester and international tour), for which he received a Laurence Olivier Award nomination for Best Newcomer in a Play.  Other theatre credits include The Entertainer and Richard II (Old Vic). TV appearances include The Thick Of It and Essex Girls (BBC), Doc Martin and Up Close and Personal (ITV). (more…)

Royal Exchange wins three TMA awards

Productions by Manchester’s Royal Exchange Theatre scooped a hat-trick of prestigious Theatrical Management Association Theatre Awards at a special ceremony held in London at the weekend.

Brenda Blethyn’s much-acclaimed performance as Amanda Wingfield in Tennessee Williams’ The Glass Menagerie took the award in the ‘Best Performance’ category; Kate O’Flynn won ‘Best Supporting Performance’ for her role Mary Tilford in The Children’s Hour and Mick Hughes took the ‘Best Lighting Design’ gong for his work on the same production.

The Theatrical Management Association (TMA) is the UK’s major business association for organisations and companies including theatres and arts venues, involved professionally in the production and presentation of performing arts. Since 1991 the annual TMA awards have celebrated the creative excellence and outstanding work seen in UK theatres each year. (more…)
