song-for-lovers.jpgThe Lowry are celebrating some of the best new and emerging performance companies from the North West and beyond, with a whole season of studio shows this Autumn. Beginning on Thu 11 September when Theatre North return with their new show, Lord Arthur’s Bed, the season ends with Tim Crouch’s England, a unique production that takes place in The Lowry Galleries on Thu 27 - Fri 28 November.

The Lowry has invited a truly diverse selection of innovative and daring theatre companies to perform over two months, as a way of introducing and supporting new writing. South Manchester-based Monkeywood Theatre Company have previously performed at fringe venues in the city and are delighted to bring a new adaptation of their 24:7 Theatre Festival hit, A Song for the Lovers, (pictured) to The Lowry’s studio from Thu 9 – Sat 11 October.

Co-founder and writer Sarah McDonald-Hughes said, “We are thrilled to be performing in such an amazing venue and fantastic theatre space. It is an unbelievable opportunity for us to present our rewritten play to different audiences and we’re really grateful to The Lowry for opening their doors. For smaller-scale theatre companies there are still limited fringe spaces or festivals available in the North West, so this new season is really exciting.”

Some established companies and performers will also appear as part of the season. Phoenix Nights actress Janice Connolly, AKA Barbara Nice appears in The Bad One on Fri 7 November and Analogue bring their Edinburgh Festival 4 star multi-media production, Mile End, on Wed 15 & Thu 16 October. Nico Icon Play by Ultraviolet Productions, from Wed 12 – Sat 22 November, stars Prestwich-based Intastella front-woman, Stella Grundy, as the ill-fated singer with Velvet Underground.

Porl Cooper, Theatres Programmer at The Lowry, said “We’re often perceived as being somewhat ‘impenetrable’, especially amongst smaller regionally-based companies because we present world-renowned large-scale companies, such as the Kirov, the RSC and Opera North. The 200 seat Studio theatre gives us the perfect opportunity to take risks and this season we’re broadening the spectrum of work being presented in there. We’re offering a platform to showcase work that’s smaller in scale, younger in years, or has a less well-established profile.”

The Lowry are offering a season ticket giving the chance to see all 10 Studio shows for £40! Tickets are limited so early booking is advised to avoid disappointment!
