THE PLAY:
Popular film and television actor Stephen Tompkinson returns to Manchester’s Royal Exchange Theatre later this month to star as Vindice in a powerful new production of bloody Jacobean thriller The Revenger’s Tragedy from Wednesday 28 May to Saturday 28 June.

Best known for his work on high profile TV series such as Drop The Dead Donkey, Ballykissangel and Wild At Heart, Tompkinson also has big screen successes which include BAFTA nominated Brassed Off. Back at the Royal Exchange for the first time in sixteen years, his previous RET credits include Women Laughing and Love’s Labour’s Lost.

Guest director Jonathan Moore takes the helm for this blackly comic tale of lust, ambition and violent retribution, rich in savage poetry, sensuality and humour. At the centre of the action, Vindice seeks to avenge the murder of his beloved Gloriana - leaving a massive body count in his wake. The action will be brought to vivid life with lavish sets and costumes from acclaimed designer David Blight. Read more

The Eurovision Song Contest is one of those must-see Saturday evenings on the television calendar. The voting is dubious, the songs are mainly awful and the costumes usually represent a country so stereotypically, that you usually die laughing as you quaff your pizza and pass round your pineapple and cheese sticks.

Thank heavens for Terry Wogan, your sardonic host who guides you through the good, the bad and the downright ugly. But now you can also thank Craig Christie & Andrew Patterson, the writers of the hilarious new spoof musical, Eurobeat for capturing the sheer lunacy of this crazy competition.

As soon as you see Wogan on video introducing the show, you are in, ready to wave your flag, cheer on your assigned country and wallow in the zany spectacle that awaits you. Your hosts for the evening are Boyka (Mel Giedroyc) and Sergei (Gareth Hale). In typical Eurovision style, these two think that they are bigger than the event itself and they have sly digs at the acts as they exit. Read more

This is partly to annoy her mother, and unaware that he is Neville’s son, Anita accepts a date with Aaron (Mark Springer) despite his bad boy reputation.

Queer Up North has been giving Manchester arts lovers food for thought for over a week now. And what a week it’s been!
