Queer Up North - ready to roll

May 9, 2008

After a touch and go few months, Queer Up North is finally open for business, with the opening taking place tonight. First up is the brilliant comedienne, Sandra Bernhard with her celebrated show, Without You I’m Nothing. This is her only UK date and should be a great opener to the festival.

But many people have asked me this week; who is she? Well, friends under 30, that is! Bernhard has starred in the hit sit com, Roseanne, Martin Scorcese’s critically acclaimed film, The King Of Comedy, Will & Grace and The L Word. But, in her guise as stand up comedienne is where this talented lady truly shines.

She regularly appears at the Castro Cinema in San Francisco to sell out crowds on New Year’s Eve. Going back a few years, she snogged Madonna and speculation grew about the pair, until it was revealed that the ‘affair’ was staged. This was before the internet and the buzz about the pair was huge. It did neither Madge or Sandra any harm.

Without You I’m Nothing was first seen in 1988 and it promises to be a lethal combination of barbed wit, rock and roll and sizzling satire.

If you missed the movie version first time around, it is showing at the Cornerhouse tomorrow and Bernhard will be there in person to discuss the show and take questions from the audience.

Other highlights of the festival include, Queer Question Time, Tough time, nice time; Ridiculusmus’ bleak comedy, Rock, a look at the seamy world of 1950’s Hollywood, starring Bette Bourne and Justin Bond’s May Queen a Vernal She-Quniox.

We will be covering much of the festival here at WOS Manchester, so please join us over the next two weeks as we take a look at queer culture up north.

Signing off now, as off to see Sandra, hopefully she will thrill all-comers at the Opera House!
