Matthew Bourne’s Nutcracker!

Matthew Bourne’s Nutcracker
Venue: The Lowry
Date Reviewed: 27th February
![]()
Matthew Bourne’s work always equals big box office for the Lowry and looking at his Nutcracker, you can see why! This talented dance-maestro has reworked ballet, dance and film - creating a series of silent movies, live on stage with a brilliant team of dancers, superb sets and heartfelt music.
Never one to disappoint, this clever and exciting director and choreographer revisits his classic re-telling of the popular ballet. The audience know the original piece very well, which gives Bourne the ability to pull a rug from right underneath their expectations. He transfers the action from a rich upper class home to an orphange and it works briliantly.
The stage is filled with drab colours and there is a Tim Burton-esque quality to the proceedings early on. Once we are taken to the lake, this exciting piece resembles a kitsch version of Raymond Brigg’s Snowman. Read more
Win ‘Our Friends In The North’ tix @ The Lowry
February 27, 2008

This competition is now closed and the answer is Daniel Craig.
Congratulations to Michael Coupar!
The first ever revival of the play Our Friends in the North, familiar to many people as one of the greatest television series of all time, visits The Lowry on Tue 18 March. Few people realise that the Bafta-winning series, that made stars of virtual unknowns Daniel Craig and Christopher Eccleston, started life as a small-scale play produced by the RSC.
Now, 25 years later, Northern Stage are turning north-east writer Peter Flannery’s play into a large-scale epic.
THE SHOW:
This is a drama of epic proportions, with 14 actors playing 43 characters, across 17 years and two continents. Told through the stories of four friends – Nicky, Mary, Tosker and Geordie – it is a magnificent chronicle through the 1960s and 70s, jumping from the Houses of Commons, to the banks of the River Tyne, to Scotland Yard, through a Newcastle high-rise and even into a seedy Soho porn shop. It’s a fast-paced and slick journey through the murky world of whispered conversations in the corridors of power and underhand deals, where everyone is getting their hands dirty.
THE OFFER:
The Lowry have kindly offered one WOS Manchester reader a pair of tickets to see Our Friends In North on Tuesday, 18th March. If you love a good drama, this play could be right up your street. Read more

The Wedding Singer
Venue: Palace Theatre

There have been no end of juke box musicals to choose from recently, so the fact that The Wedding Singer has an original score makes it stand out in a crowd. But you are not watching a true original, as the show is based on the film of the same name which starred Adam Sandler and Drew Barrymore.
Replacing these Hollywood stars are Jonathan Wilkes as Robbie Hart - the third rate wedding singer and Natalie Casey as Julia, the waitress with a heart of gold. Once jilted at the altar, he falls for her - but she is due to wed rich guy, Glen.
If you like rom coms, then this one has many familiar ingredients to make you smile, including; annoying would-be spouses and wise cracking best friends. But it lacks real romance. Read more

Stewart Lee- 41st Best Stand Up Ever!
Venue: The Lowry
Date Reviewed: 25th February

Here at WOS Manchester, we rarely get the chance to review comedy but Stewart Lee has the perfect theatrical connection - he co-wrote the ground breaking Jerry Springer- The Opera.
But what of his comedy act? Surely once you have seen one stand up comedian honing their material so that it relates to the audience, you have seen them all. Cue- funny stories rolling off the tongue followed by a spot of batting hecklers back and forth and you have the ingredients for a comedy night out.
But Stew is not your archetypal comedian, as his material bravely confounds all of your expectations. The format for his shows should not work but due to the skill and intelligence of the delivery, it works wonderfully. How many other comedians could repeat the same joke/story from a different angle and make you laugh through your hands?
Lee’s stories are, at times funny and yet quite sardoic, as he recalls his mother’s love of an old Tom O’Connor joke over his own material. We also hear how the BBC pulled the plug on a TV show he was comissioned to write. Their loss and our gain, as this intelligent genre-busting comedian is refreshingly different. Read more
