Queer Up North Festival under threat

Wednesday, January 9th, 2008

The Arts Council has announced plans to end its annual funding of queerupnorth in March 2008. This popular and innovative festival was due to be staged in Manchester in May. The programme includes Tough Time, Nice Time, by radical theatre troupe Ridiculusmus and The Fairy Godfather of Hollywood, avant-garde performer Bette Bourne’s show about the life and times of Hollywood screen icon Rock Hudson.

This withdrawal of funds means will lead to the cancellation of the 2008 festival in Manchester, halt all future touring plans, and result in the closure of Queer Up North.

Many Manchester venues including the Library Theatre, Contact Theatre, The Lowry, the Royal Exchange, and the Bridgewater Hall have all called on Arts Council Northwest not to cut queerupnorth’s funding. (more…)

The show has been touring the country since July, offering audiences value for money as they get to see two contestants from the BBC TV hit talent show.

Chalmers was often criticised by many judges on the programme for being too ‘cabaret’ but Bill Kenwright himself often defended him. He has since commented: “I said from day one that I thought Craig would make a terrific Joseph. “He has the looks, the physique, the voice – and the talent.” (more…)
