Wedding Singer Wilkes talks to WOS Manchester

Jonathan Wilkes talks about his favourite stage role, his new show The Wedding Singer and Manchester audiences. Jonathan Wilkes has presented You’ve Been Framed, CDUK and a host of other TV shows. He has carved out a career in musical theatre starring in everything from Grease, Tommy, Guys and Dolls and The Rocky Horror Picture Show. He is currently in preparation for the lead role in the UK premiere of The Wedding Singer which opens in Manchester.

Who has been your favourite character and why?
I think i would have to say Rocky Horror, just because of the sheer love of Frank…I was allowed to do anything I wanted and he is without a doubt the most characteristic person ever.

You have done television presenting, how does this prepare you for
theatre?
If anything theatre prepares you for TV. I love theatre, as it still
excites me when I walk into a venue.

How does it feel to star in the UK Premiere of a Broadway show?
It’s everything I’ve ever wanted - to be first in your own country to do
a show.

What preparation have you had to do for your role in The Wedding Singer?
Well my experience at a wedding is I get up and sing at everyone..I love
a good wedding. I think the preparation for this one is not a million miles away from
myself.. Robbie Hart is guy who loves people enjoying themselves, exactly like me.

What can audiences expect from the show?
A great night out, with great songs, a great script and simple message
about love (ahhhhh!)

You have worked with some great co stars over the years, who have been
your favourites?
It would be unfair to single one out. I’ve been very lucky to work with
so many great and lovely people.

How do Manchester audiences differ from the rest?
I think it’s their love for life..and just having a good time and not
taking life seriously. I’m from Stoke-on-Trent and the audiences in my
hometown are wonderful too!

What are you looking forward to the most about being in The Wedding
Singer
?
I think developing this character, and every night going on stage and
enjoying myself, and watching other people enjoying it too.

What are your plans following the tour?
HOLIDAY!!!!!!! No not sure yet, it’s too far away…it would be great
to take The Wedding Singer into London’s West End.

The Wedding Singer opens at the Palace Theatre, Manchester from 18th February until 18th March. To book, click here
