Jeff Hordley talks to WOS Manchester

November 2, 2007

Everyone recognises actor Jeff Hordley for his most famous role in the hit soap opera, Emmerdale, as bad boy Cain Dingle. Like many jobbing actors, this has the odd drawback as audiences believe as soon as they are off the screen that they stop working. The complete opposite is the case for Jeff, as any theatre goer in the North will tell you, this talented actor treads the boards regularly.

Recently Hordley starred in the highly acclaimed And Did Those Feet at the Octagon in Bolton. He now returns to this wonderful venue for the musical Oh! What A Lovely War, starring alongside Matthew Kelly and another soap veteran, John McArdle (Billy Corkhill in the hit Brookside.)

Here, Jeff talks about his love of The Octagon, his role in Emmerdale, his DJ stints and how to keep the stamina going in a musical.

What attracted you to Oh! What a Lovely War?
The fact that it’s an ensemble piece, with music, and dance which really stretch me – and a complete change from clog-dancing in And Did Those Feet!

You’ve worked many times at The Octagon Theatre. What keeps you coming back?
Mark Babych, the Artistic Director, I really admire and respect his work.

Why should we come to see Oh! What a Lovely War?
Assuming you can get a ticket, because it’s a fantastic piece of Theatre – Enough said!

Musical Theatre requires a great deal of stamina. How do you keep going?
As much rest as possible and lots of water

Are there any other areas of performance which interest you apart from acting?
Music is another passion. I DJ at The Roadhouse, a club in Manchester, on a night called Long Live Rock ‘n Roll.

What are your plans for the future?
A holiday with my wife and daughter

Oh! What A Lovely War continues at The Octagon until Sat 17 November.
