Lip Service talk Bond…. Jane Bond

September 26, 2007

Lipservice are a popular female comedy duo based in Manchester. They have been writing and performing together since 1985. Between them they have have penned 14 comedies for the stage. Their unique brand of spoofery has a real Northern flavour, reminscent of Victoria Wood.

They return to the Library Theatre in October with Jane Bond. I caught up with Maggie Fox and Sue Ryding; aka Lipservice during rehearsals.

Where did you both train?
We met in the drama department of Bristol University

If you hadn’t become actresses/writers, what would you have done professionally?
Maggie-possibly only good as a waitress-I was pretty nifty with the Silver Service

First big break?
Our own series on Radio 4

Career highlights?
Supporting Victoria Wood at the Opera House

Favourite directors?
Peter Brook-the acting is always very smooth and beautiful and quiet

Favourite playwright?
Chekhov, Caryl Churchill

What was the last thing you saw that had an impact on you?
Martin Tucker, our acrobat leaping off Hulme Library

Favourite book and why?
Black Swan Green by David Mitchell-story told through the eyes of a 13 year old boy. Read it over the summer and relived the 80’s.

If you could swap place with one person, living or dead, who would it be?
Valerie Singleton circa 1970’s…I too can do amazing things with sticky back plastic.

How is Jane Bond going?
We’ve had brilliant reactions to the show-from all ages.

Tell us about the show….
It’s an action-packed thriller, a pastiche of all things Bond. Set in 2012, the bill for the Olympics is rising and MI6 have had their budgets cut and are employing single mums on a job share.

You have boundless energy on stage, playing a variety of roles… how do you keep the momentum going?
You have to stay in the moment otherwise you¹re serving up dead theatre….oh and lots of tea and cake helps!!

What funny things have happened in rehearsals?
Mistaking the real rabbit (Bunny Galore) for it’s stunt double during a fight session

What do you plan to spoof in the future?
Those Hugh Grant films, Sue quite fancies the floppy hair. And Maggie the Andie Mc Dowell part because she’s worth it.

Jane Bond opens on at the Library Theatre on 9 October where it continues until 20 October.
