Hairspray- Looking Good!
July 28, 2007
Having got back from Greece, I decided to see the film Hairspray as it has had some really positive reviews. I am a big fan of the orginal John Waters film, so I half expected this musical version to be a bit blow dried and conditioned. But, if the stage version is as good as this film, the West End is in for a nice surprise. The performances by Nikki Blonsky, Michelle Pfeiffer, James Marsden and John Travolta are excellent. The only weak link is Amanda Brnes as best friend, Penny. This actress could not mime or sing and clearly had been cast for her teen appeal only.
The score is wonderful and instantly memorable. The whole film is a camp and corny confection, ideal for anyone fed up with the endless amount of sequels vying for your attention.
Call me a musical lover, but the film had me from the opening song: “Good Morning Baltimore!”
This bodes well for the West End version, particularly if the casting rumour is true and Ben from Any Dream Will Do has the part of Link, as it will suit him down to the ground. I was lucky enough to see Tracie Bennett in Sex, Chips And Rock N’ Roll and also think she will be a perfect Velma Von Tussle.
Tomorrow, I will post my review of Pretend You Have Big Buildings, but until then if you are in need of a great film fix, Hairspray really does deliver.
