Opening- Blood Brothers, Jump , Triumph and Library Theatre back in business
April 15, 2007
It’s all change in Manchester this week with a mixture of old and new productions.
The well received martial arts comedy Jump opens at the Lowry on Tuesday. Following its huge success at the Peacock Theatre in London, this unusual show promises to be something quite different. Tickets are selling well, so book quickly- if you want a decent view of the family who literally fight for each other. Jump opens on Tues 17th and runs at the Lowry until Sat 21st April.
Blood Brothers arrives at the Opera House tomorrow. This evergreen classic still has what it takes and you can see why it sells out every time it comes here. In Manchester for two weeks, Willy Russell’s brilliant tale stars Linda Nolan as Mrs Johnstone. There are still some good tickets available.
Following their brilliant production of Who’s Afraid Of Virginia Woolf (which I have now seen twice) - The Royal Exchange change gear with a comedy - The Triumph Of Love. Directed by Braham Murray, this promises to be a comedy with a gender twist. From Tues 17th April until 19th May.
The Library Theatre bravely continued staging the hit comedy Chapter Two - at the Capitol Theatre following the small fire. But now they open their doors for Not A Game For The Boys. This intimate theatre has a great reputation and rightfully so. If you haven’t been before, you can book here. Not A Game opens on Thurs 19th April and closes on Saturday 28th.
I will be bringing you reviews of Blood Brothers and Jump, The Triumph Of Love and Agatha Christie’s The Unexpected Guest soon. Enjoy!
Eclipse @ The Lowry - Review
April 12, 2007
Eclipse- The Circus Musical at The Lowry
Eclipse has been doing well in Blackpool for some time now. It has a mixture of circus acts, music and dance. These ingredients have meant that people have kept coming back to the Pleasure Beach time and time again. You can see why, as there is plenty to keep a family entertained, including; acrobatics, clowns, trapeze artistes and Euro pop. The music is slightly grating but it does provide a soundtrack for the circus performers and the small audience on the afternoon I attended - warmed to every aspect of the show.
The variety of the acts performing keeps you interested and alert. Kelly Willars dangles above the stage, whilst other performers spin on a giant ball, somersault and balance precariously- winning your affections with their superb athlectism. For younger members of the audience- two juggling clowns- keep you smiling with their grinning faces and funny dance moves.
Daddy Cool hits Manchester, Virginia Woolf offer
April 6, 2007
The hit musical , Daddy Cool is touring the UK from September. The 1st stop is the Palace Theatre, Manchester. The show which starred Javine, Harvey and Michelle Collins is a celebration of the hits of 70’s super group, Boney M. It did much better in London than many expected. Tickets are available now for the Manchester dates- simply click here for more details.
Critic-proof Fame
April 4, 2007
I went to review Fame on tour last night for the third time. I have never gone wild for the show and it amazes me that it is still going. Although I have to say, the current touring cast including Musicality’s Debralee Wells are all superb. The audience went wild for the show and the Opera House in Manchester was packed to the rafters. As the show heads for the West End again, you almost feel that it is completely critic proof. On our discussion board at the moment Bess has led a thread on panned shows and users are invited to list shows that survived a critical backlash. It has got me thinking; what is the secret to the success of Fame? The show is based loosely on the film and TV show - so there is nostalgic value. But what else? The songs are at times- laughable and many of the dance scenes look like an exercise video in their execution. Granted this touring version has Abi Finley from the hit Maria reality show. It also has Hollie and Darrien from Strictly Dance Fever in the ensemble. But, why has it lasted 10 years? Answers on a postcard please.
Chapter @ The LIbrary Theatre -Cancelled
April 3, 2007
Following a fire at the weekend, the well received play Chapter Two is now ending its run earlier than planned. The play due to continue at the library until Saturday 14 April has been cancelled.
The fire took place in a theatre storeroom in Friday 30 March.

Much of the theatre space itself is unaffected but the area needs to be cleaned up and repaired. So it has been decided to open for business with their next production, Not A Game For The Boys which opens on Thursday, 19th April.
Anyone who has tickets for Chapter Two can contact the box office on 0161 236 7110 for a credit voucher, tickets for another show, or to obtain a refund. The Central Library itself remains open.
