Cucumber Trumpets On The RadioDate: 16 August 2011 It was our day off today but we've been busy being interviewed for Radio 4 Extra's Four O'Clock Show with the lovely Mel Geidroyc, a personal hero of mine. We laid on a private cucumber trumpet-making workshop for Mel and her two charming children at the Royal Botanic Garden Edinburgh. The cucumber trumpets were a big hit with the kids and with Mel. They all took their trumpets away with them to play/eat in their hotel.
I was pleased because I made my first cucumber trumpet. Usually my co-performer Dan Woods - who actually plays the cucumber trumpet in the show - is in charge of cucumber trumpet manufacturing. He's become quite an expert and was showing off quite a lot, including playing God Save The Queen. I am sure Her Majesty would approve.
We rounded off the session with a rousing rendition of When The Saints Go Marching In with me on ukulele. Goodness knows what it will sound like on the radio. Cucumber trumpets basically make comical farting noises. The show with us on is going to be broadcast one day next week, apparently. They may even play a snippet from the Can You Dig It? CD - available to buy online NOW here.
I was a bit starstuck at meeting Mel because I think she's very funny and great on TV and radio. She's also incredibly nice, which is good because there is nothing worse than meeting your heroes and discovering they are arseholes.
