Hot Ice (Blackpool)

Venue: Blackpool Pleasure Beach
Where: Blackpool

Hot Ice is a spectacular cheesy and camp show like they used to make but that is by no means a bad thing. Still playing in Blackpool and as popular as ever, the production has fantastic stunts, superb choreography and a host of ice dancing stars who imbue a sense of fun into both acts.

The show is basically a series of short dance sequences and unlike many ice shows, some of the moves see the performers dancing on ice, quite literally. In fact, one striking vignette sees them almost dancing on the tiptoes, should I say the tips of their skates.

The likes of Dancing On Ice favourite Katie Stainsby and athletic Daria Perminova dazzle the audience with their mesmerising moves and 1000 dollar smiles. Antony Johns and Oula Jaaskelainen‘s choreography keeps on giving as each piece becomes more dynamic and jaw-dropping than what has gone before. The audience on the night I attended loved every minute.

A couple of scenes act as filler including a bath tub which is placed in the centre of the rink with Alexey Kovanov killing time, albeit spectacularly so, as the other performers complete one of many costume changes. Also, at times, the constant winking of some of the performers does remind you of Seaside Special.

But with skits of Chicago, Flamenco, Disco moves, and more back flips than you will see in a Michael Jackson video, this is a Hot Ice show leaves that leaves you feeling far from cold. I took 9 year old Sol White-Wood with me and he described it as “kewl.”

If you like the sound of Hot Ice, you better hurry though, as it ends on 4 September.
