Five Reasons To See … The Lock In
The Lock In is a new dance piece for which the word fusion seems to be invented. This innovative piece is at the Lowry later this month and we asked the artistic director – Damien Barber for five reasons why should go along.
1. Puts English folk dance on the map
The Lock In promises to do for English folk dance what Riverdance did for Irish dance and Diversity did for street dance, bringing some lesser known forms of dance into the mainstream. Fast-paced and innovative, the show brings together some of the UK’s top clog, sword and Morris dancers with their counterparts from the worlds of B-boying, popping & krump.
2. Live music
is provided by The Demon Barbers, winners of BBC Radio Folk Award ‘Best Live Act 2009. Beatboxing by current UK female beatbox champion Grace Savage and percussion by BBC Young Musician of the Year 2006, Toby Kearney.
3. Quashes stereotypes
The Lock In destroys the negative stereotypes of traditional English dance and helps reaffirm its importance in today’s society. Folk & Hip Hop dance are two of the fastest growing community dance forms in the UK today.
