Broken Time Tries Out at St Helens

Broken Time – a new play which explores the drama behind the momentous split of rugby into union and league is set to tour leading venues across the North of England including St Helens Theatre Royal from Tue 4 – Fri 7 October.

Written by award-winning playwright Mick Martin, author of the cult hit Once Upon a time in Wigan, the play explores a spirit and passion for the game which continues to this day. The story follows a fictional town and club, West Broughton, whose team is going awry. Lewy Jenkins, rising star of Welsh rugby, is lured to play up north with the promise of a public house of his very own and a few quid besides! Lewy loves to play, and soon he loves a certain young star of the music hall – Miss Bessie Butterworth!

Writer, Mick Martin, a life-long rugby fan, said: “It’s such a big, powerful, important, dramatic story about our common heritage and culture. Rugby is all about big personalities staking everything, summoning up all their skill strength and willpower to win the day. It’s the perfect material for the stage!”

The show is directed by Conrad Nelson, who is Resident Director for Northern Broadsides based in Halifax. Conrad has worked as actor and Musical Director on almost every production, most recently playing alongside Lenny Henry in Othello.

Broken Time is set to across Rugby League’s heartlands, including : St Helens Theatre Royal from 4 -7 October.
