Five Reasons To See…Proms In The Park (Salford)
Proms In The Park comes to Salford next week and features West End Star, Recording Artist and TV actor and Presenter John Barrowman. We asked Lindsey Hebden, tourism Marketing Manager at Salford City Council for her five reasons why you should attend.
1. It is spectacular outdoor musical event on your doorstep
BBC Proms in the Park in Salford is a unique chance to be part of BBC’s Last Night of the Proms at Salford’s largest outdoor stage – set in the historic Buile Hill Park.Salford is only one of four locations outside London to feature in the BBC Last Night of the Proms concerts. Buile Hill Park is a Grade II listed Park of National Historic Importance with links to important historical figures including L.S. Lowry, suffragette Emmeline Pankhurst and Frances Hodgson Burnett, author of classic children’s novel The Secret Garden. It features an 18 hole pitch & putt course, tennis courts, tropical plant collections, play areas, picnic areas – as well as what is thought to be the world’s first ‘interactive’ tree trail.
2. Dr Who and Torchwood-star John Barrowman is headlining
Headline act John Barrowman is set to wow audiences with a mix of classic show tunes and pop hits. John is well-known for his leading roles in the West End, as well as for his appearances on the hit US TV series Desperate Housewives and his new BBC One chat-show Tonight’s The Night. “Don’t Rain On My Parade” and I Am What I Am” are just two of the big musical numbers he will be singing on the night along with some soulful classics and numbers composed for the 1963 Pink Panther film and from the more recent musical Nine starring Nicole Kidman and Penelope Cruz.
3. A unique chance to see the BBC Philharmonic
The BBC Philharmonic will be performing a specially arranged Judy Garland medley, the theme from The Great Escape as well as the usual Proms show-stoppers.
4. Exclusive performance by Duetto
Salford opera star Jon Christos, who is performing and hosting on the night, will also be joining his protégé, rising soprano star and fellow member of Duetto, Jenny Williams, on stage before the start of the show in an exclusive performance for the park audience.
5. An unforgettable atmosphere
As well as fantastic performances on stage, fans can also soak up the unique Proms atmosphere and enjoy al fresco dining, with a range of catering stalls offering a selection of Spanish, French, Italian, Mexican and traditional food, along with licensed bars and hot and cold drinks. There are also special Lakeland Picnics available, which can be pre-ordered online and collected onsite and to round off the night in true Proms style, there’ll be a spectacular fireworks finale to close the show.
