Five Reasons To See … Miss Julie in Buxton
Miss Julie has been staged many times but a new production promises to offer you something new, when it comes to the Buxton Opera House in April. Here’s five reasons why you should attend.
1. World Premiere
This production is the World Premiere of a brand new translation of August Strindberg’s 1888 play from the original Swedish text, translated by the company through an exciting 8 month development process.
2. Banned
This powerful play was originally banned in the UK for 50 years until 1939, because of its depiction of an inter-class relationship between an aristocratic young lady and her servant. What starts as a harmless flirtation soon develops into a ferocious power struggle and battle of the sexes, from which neither can escape.
3. Critics adore it
Now widely regarded as Strindberg’s masterpiece, “Miss Julie” has received worldwide critical acclaim. It is one of the most ground-breaking plays of the 19th century.
4. Contemporary
This production has a brand new script, which is direct, punchy and accessible to a modern audience.
5. Costume Drama
Music and Costumes The production includes beautiful period costumes and set by theatre designer Mike Lees and original Swedish music – if you love period costume dramas, this is the production to see!
