Five Reasons To See …Glengarry Glen Ross
Richard Dormer stars as Richard Roma in the Library Theatre’s eagerly anticipated production of director Chris Honer’s North West regional premiere of David Mamet’s Glengarry Glen Ross, which opens in Manchester later this week. Here, Richard gives us his five reasons to see this classic drama.
1. The Script:
I first read Glengarry Glen Ross when I was at Rada. I was 20 and it blew me away. I’d never encountered writing like it before. It just sizzles and pops along, it’s vicious, clever and very funny.
2. The Story:
The play is set over two days and tells the story of four very different salesmen desperately trying to outdo one another selling useless property to gullible victims. It’s dog eat dog in early ’80s Chicago. It’s the American dream; one man’s gain is another man’s loss.
3. Morality:
It’s a modern morality play, I think. Or rather it’s about the absence of morality.
4. The Era:
1980s Chicago. Bad suits, bang-bang dialogue, and a f**k you attitude.
5. And Finally:
This is one of the best American plays ever written. It’s a great cast and I think a great production. You’d be a fool to miss this!
