Architect chosen for Liverpool’s Royal Court

Allford Hall Monaghan Morris has been picked as the architect to restore the Royal Court theatre in Roe Street, Liverpool.

The London-based practice beat local firms Studio Three Architects in Fleet Street and Union North Architects, based in Hope Street, and London firms Burrell Foley Fischer and Pentagram.

Strong competition also came from Glasgow’s Nord Architects and Studio Andrew Todd from Paris, with both losing out on the contract win.

AHMM’s winning scheme to revamp the 1938 art deco theatre was selected by a jury chaired by architect Roger Stephenson and Jonathan Falkingham, the chief executive of Urban Splash and a trustee of the newly formed Royal Court Liverpool Trust.

AHMM’s design was praised for addressing key challenges, such as disabled access and for improving public access and circulation within the building to create a clear and exciting concept for the upgrading of the Grade II-listed theatre.
