Midnight Tango (Birmingham)

Following a sell out run in the West End, Strictly Come Dancing stars Vincent Simone and Flavia Cacace bring their evening of tango routines to Birmingham.

As you would expect, the dancing is captivating, although it feels at times that there is too much going on on the stage. This seems however to be only in the earlier scenes and does not reoccur in the second act. The main featured dancers are Simone and Cacace but the rest of the cast are equally talented. There are many variations on the tango theme, all beautifully executed. Diomar Giraldo as El Gato adds a touch of danger as he vies for the attention of Sofia (Cacace). One of the highlights was an ingeniously choreographed fight, a clever use of traditional tango moves in an original routine. Towards the end of the show the pace of the dancing speeds up and it is here we see some of the most stunning routines from the whole cast.

Although principally a dance show, there are also strong storylines in and around the dancing. Anthony Renshaw and Tricia Deighton play Carlos and Rosa, the owners of the bar. Their own love story is beautifully depicted and culminates in a tango that proves you are never too old for dancing or love.

The set is a detailed double height bar interior that adds to the flavour of the show. The lighting design further enhances the experience, accentuating the lines and shapes created by the dancers. With a live band on stage and the mellow tones of Miguel Angel you are transported to Latin America.

This is an enjoyable show of skill, passion and love that will have you reaching for your dance shoes.
