High Society (Birmingham)

By • Central
WOS Rating:

A touch of glamour and style arrives at Birmingham Hippodrome in the shape of the classic Cole Porter musical, High Society. The musical only premiered in the West End in 2005 so this new production is a welcome return for the 1939 Broadway play.

Set in the lead up to a big summer wedding, Tracy Lord must face her ex-husband who has arrived to try and win her back. A further twist arrives in the form of Mike Connor who also tries to steal Tracy’s heart. The turbulent love life of Tracy is played out with several twists and turns that not everybody in the family is best pleased about.

Another production from the consortium of nationwide venues, Music & Lyrics, this is a glamorous and lavish piece. The revolving stage works wonders with seamless set changes and beautiful set pieces and props that all add to the glamour of the wealthy Lord home.

Midlands actress Sophie Bould gives a comedic and joyful take on her character, whilst maintaining the scantiness and femininity that Tracy Lord requires. Her pure vocals are a treat during numbers such as True Love.

Understudy Matt Corner as Mike Connor, replacing Daniel Boys for the night, does a sensational job during his solo number and throughout with his flirtatious behavior with Liz Imbrie (Alex Young). Michael Praed is a stand out performer, his deep vocals and perfectly suited to Dexter and his closing number I Love You Samantha is a personal highlight.

High Society is such a classic musical and this production brings together the glamour and substance that it deserves, what a swell party!

Plays at Birmingham Hippodrome through Saturday 18 May.
