Sweeney Todd (Coventry)

Musical Theatre Warwick present their version of ”Sweeney Todd”, Annette Nuttall reviews.

Musical Theatre Warwick is a student society from Warwick University. However, from the quality of the performance of Sweeney Todd you could be forgiven for forgetting that this is essentially a student show.

This Sondheim musical thriller tells the tale of Benjamin Barker, a skilled barber whose family was torn apart by a jealous judge while he was sentenced to live life on the other side of the world for a crime he did not commit. Barker makes his way back to London and changes his name to Sweeney Todd so he can seek his revenge on the men that ruined his life.

Although this is a dark tale, there are wonderful lighter moments supplied by Bethany Adams, her Mrs Lovett oozing character, wit and perfect timing. Sweeney himself, Stuart Nunn, was menacing yet tormented, his voice powerful and full of emotion. The characterisation of every lead and indeed ensemble member was strong and confident.

The use of the ensemble was effective, the movements were beautifully choreographed and added to the atmosphere. Add to this the vocal range and ability and you have a strong ensemble.

Lighting was used to great effect on a striking but simple set. Using black boxes to depict a location was an interesting way to get around scene change issues. There were a few issues with the sound at times which meant some of the lyrics were lost, first night teething problems probably due to limited rehearsal time.

There are names here to watch out for in the future. This production is a triumph, a credit to everyone involved.
