Spamalot (Southampton)

As a long standing Monty Python fan I looked forward tremendously to Spamalot, and I am not disappointed. I was afraid it might be badly dated but it is certainly not. A fantastic adult pantomime, the scenes skip by amid a sea of laughter.

Wonderful costumes and imaginative scenery provide a spoof opulence the original Pythons could only have dreamt of.

Phill Jupitus portrays a dry and cynical King Arthur, with a sardonic and laid back delivery. He is supported admirably by a multi-talented, dynamic company who never fail to entertain and amuse. Every little nuance, carefully executed on the outskirts of the main action, catches the eye and tickles the funny bone.

Jodie Prenger shines as the Lady of the Lake, her huge voice soaring over the auditorium. Her rendition of the amusingly sad ‘Diva’s Lament’ is both poignant and very funny.

Todd Carty in the role of Patsy is perfect. His comic timing and facial expressions delight the senses throughout, reminding me of a doleful Baldrick from ‘Black Adder’.

Of the first class supporting actors I must mention David Langham who plays his various parts wonderfully well, and absolutely shines as Prince Herbert, with deft comic touch.

The accompanying seven piece orchestra is brilliant in its performance of a superb score, perfectly complimenting the whacky and lyrical script.

The original Monty Python and the Holy Grail film this show is based on, is seamlessly supplemented by satirical topical news items, bringing roars of delight from the audience.

Although I feel the show slightly loses its way at the beginning of the second act, it is a gloriously entertaining, nostalgic feast. Whether an original Python fan or not, you will love it! Eric Idle and his team have produced a hilarious splendour of loveable silliness!
