1. Macbeth at the Manchester International Festival

3. Richard II - RSC at the Royal Shakespeare Theatre, Stratford-upon-Avon
The first production in a new cycle of Shakespeare's History plays at the Royal Shakespeare Theatre, Richard II was described in our review as a "complex, rolling, many-splendoured drama".
Starring David Tennant, the production has since transferred to the Barbican Centre where it runs until 25 January.

4. The Prodigals at the Belgrade, Coventry
Critics described it as "a night of raw emotion" and "an intensely moving story."

5. To Sir, With Love at the Royal & Derngate, Northampton & on tour
Based on E R Braithwaite's autobiography, To Sir, With Love is the story of Ricky Braithwaite, an ex-RAF fighter pilot and Cambridge graduate who arrives in London in 1948.
