Industry marks first annual Stage Management Day

Today marks the first in what is hoped will become an annual day of celebration of the work of stage managers

Today (10 October 2013) marks the first national Stage Management Day, intended to celebrate the often under-appreciated work of stage managers across the theatre industry.

Organised by the Stage Management Association (SMA), it is hoped the day will become an annual event.

According to a press statement, “Stage Management Day is an opportunity for all theatre people to show appreciation for stage management and help celebrate their achievements.

“It is going to be one day of the year when everyone in theatres across the country can celebrate the great productions we work on, and the work of our backstage colleagues, and a great way to remind us all of the importance of the work we do.”

Theatre companies and venues have been showing their support on Twitter using the #StageMgrs13 hashtag.

SMA executive director Andy Rowley told The Stage: “We have felt for a while that there ought to be some way of recognising the work backstage people do, and particularly what stage managers do.”
